When will they start to receive above level homework?
Please take a look at Parent Resources and read Homework, Homework, Homework... As the gifted teacher and even the above level co-teacher, I give very little homework. In math especially, I believe students should practice math facts daily, addition and subtraction when they are younger and multiplication and division facts as they grow. Students should know their facts like they know their name. Students can work with numbers and new concepts including decimals and fractions easily if they know their facts. Classroom teachers may give math homework and even enrichment homework throughout the year but regular homework will not start until third grade.
Students should read every night. In reading, students will begin to have vocabulary and reader's response work in third grade. They will have time to work in class. Many students can finish the assignments in that time. If your child is coming home with a ton of reading homework we might want to discuss how they are using their class time. So to sum up. I am not a big believer in homework. We work the students hard all day and have high expectations. We know that many of them are musicians and athletes and hope that our assignment don't cause undo stress. If they do receive homework it should be something that they can do without help and in a short period of time. ST math and Lightsail are daily requirements for most teachers. I have heard parent concerns over the years from those who would like more homework. In response to those concerns I have started to compile some websites that students can use to practice skills at home on any level. Please check out Homework Resources if you would like to supplement what we are doing at school. |
