Will my child always work with you during above level instruction?
No. I may not always work with your child for every lesson even if they are identified. It is rare but it happens. For example, a gifted identified student may not do well on a math pre-assessment. If they do not show mastery of at least 75% of the on-grade level material when I work with those above level student for that unit, they will work with the classroom teacher to fill those gaps before they move on the above level material. BUT if your child learns quickly the second week of a unit I may see them regardless of their pre-assessment score. The classroom teachers often can fill the gaps so that they can be exposed to the above level content. Our math instruction focuses on using unit data to drive instruction. This data helps us meet individual needs and allows for flexible grouping based on mastery. Please contact your teacher if you are curious about unit pre-tests. I have only had a few occasions where a student will fall outside the reading groups that I serve. When that does happen we reach out to parents and make sure we are communicating clearly. Our goal is to make sure that the student need is being met and they are being challenged. Sometimes they just aren't ready. I have found that boys may not be motivated to read as early as girls. It is amazing to see them decide they are interested and the light bulb goes on. Often those students can be successful in the above level groups if we just give them time.
